Michele Berdy’s latest Moscow Times column is about Russian terms for friendship and the levels of relationship they imply. (Via Mildly Malevolent.)

  1. Parallel to the later thread about translated Harry Potter titles – In this article the Cyrillic letter immediately following any opening quot (“) is invisible for me; is the fault in my browser, or in the Moscow Times’s generation of UTF?

  2. “? ?????? ?????? ????? ??????????
    “?????? (comrade)
It looks to me like what’s happened is that initial cap T has been transmuted to a quotation mark (there are no close quotes, so it obviously wasn’t intended as a quote mark); how that might have happened, I have no earthly idea.
