  1. Heh. I just read in The Grove Companion to Samuel Beckett that

    [Beckett’s character] Belacqua dismisses [Balzac’s La Comedie humaine] as a “chloroformed world” planted with “clockwork cabbages,” characters on whom a precise value may be placed.

    “Clockwork cabbages” would have worked well in that cartoon.
