Потому что жизнь не ждет.
Не оглянешься и святки.
Только промежуток краткий,
Смотришь, там и новый год.Because life does not wait.
Turn, and you find Christmas here.
And a moment after that
It’s suddenly New Year.
My favorite stanza from Pasternak’s “Снег идет” (tr. Jon Stallworthy and Peter France, “Snow Is Falling”; a different translation here). A very happy new year to all of you!
On a truly frivolous note: a while back I rewrote some lyrics from The Music Man, and I was reminded of them today when I glanced at the Rose Parade on TV.
Seventy-six calzones led the big buffet,
With a hundred and ten baguettes close at hand.
They were followed by rows and rows of the tastiest samosas,
With fresh ingredients – not canned.
Anyway, happy New Year!
Happy New Year everybody!
A very happy new year to you, too, Languagehat — may 2018 bring you many more enjoyable books!
And the same to you!
